Different Types of Water Pumps

Water pumps are used to move water from any source or in storage and transfer it to another area where the liquid is needed to be used. Water and vacuum pumps are essential to homes, buildings and other establishments for supplying water from underground sources or simply to get rid of flood or stagnant water.

Water pumps come in various types depending on their applications. Given below are some of the most common types of water pumps:

Jet Pumps

Jet Pumps can be installed in different depths below the ground. Shallow and deep well jet pumps will then pull water out of the ground between 25 feet and 100 feet. Both types of jet pumps use vacuum effect to pull water out from the well and pump it to the well equipment outside the home.

Submersible Water Pumps

Submersible water pumps functions to retrieve water from deep wells. These pumps push water up from the well instead of using machinery to pull the water out of the ground. Submersible water pumps are lowered deeper into the ground in accordance to the local water district specifications in obtaining water from the ground.

Manual Water Pumps

Manual water pumps are considered a throwback to the past because water is manually pumped out of the ground by turning a crank or pumping a lever up and down.

Sewer Water Pumps
Sewer pumps are used to pump sewage water from the house going through the septic system. Inside the septic tank, the water will break and goes back to the soil through the soil absorption system. It is then submersed into the ground to pump the septic tank to improve the life of the sump pump.

Water Circulation Pumps

Water circulation pumps are used to circulate water around the house. This uses centrifugal force to pump water from underneath the ground to its destination. For example, pumps that pump water from water purifier tanks outside into the house that sends water from the hot water heater into the consumer's bathroom, kitchen and the laundry room.

Types of Centrifugal Pumps

Centrifugal pumps use rotating impellers to increase fluid pressure and move the pressure through a central piping system. They have a built-in mechanical seal that usually adds a necessary buffer to protect the pump shaft.

Basically, centrifugal pumps are used in manufacturing and other industries that transport liquids from one point to the other. It uses centrifugal force to move the liquid through a plumbing system and hoses. Liquid then flows around the pump casing and deposits in the narrowing areas of the pipe with the goal of building pressure on it.

Centrifugal pumps also come in different types depending on their uses. Enlisted below are  commonly used centrifugal pumps:

Single-Stage Radial Flow

This is the most common type of centrifugal pump. It has a water pumps impeller that brings liquid into the impeller's centre and pushes it through the impeller vanes. As it goes through the shaft, the water goes down the narrow vanes, increasing the pressure in the pump to generate a strong flow.

Multistage Centrifugal

This contains more than one impeller mounted on a common shaft or using different shafts. It produces overall pressure and discharges higher quantities of liquid. In this case, water flows inward to different impellers, speeding the flow of water into the vanes and generates higher pressure than a single-stage pump can do.

Magnetic Drive

These are the most expensive types of centrifugal pumps. This type of pumps use magnetic field that joins a drive motor and impeller to pump fluids and increases pressure. They have similar designs to the single stage, but, because of the presence of the magnetic field this will no longer need a long shaft or seals between the motor and impeller. Leaks can be virtually eliminated and it allows significant reductions in internal contamination, wear and friction loss.

Mechanically Coupled

Is a centrifugal pump with a rotating impeller driven by the shaft with a motor connected by a strong seal. These are inexpensive centrifugal pumps available for use and offers moderate pressure and flow rates than other types, though these are more prone to leaks.

Your Personal Water Pump Buying Guide

Like any other investment, there are many things you need to consider in buying water pumps. The last thing you would want to happen is to be stuck with a pump that does not fit your needs and cannot deliver the demands that you are asking for.

So to help you make a more informed decision, below is a practical water pump buying guide you can use.

Your Needs

Water pumps are very useful tool for a variety of domestic and commercial as well as agricultural purposes. Identifying your needs first can help you decide unto what type of water pumps you should buy. You can either use water pumps for:

  • Irrigation or lawn sprinkling
  • Draining water from your basement or shallow flooded areas
  • Draining and filling your hot tub, pond or swimming pool with water
  • Constructions tasks

Choosing the Right Water Pumps for Your Needs

There are many things to consider in shopping for water pumps. They are usually measured in discharge capacity (GPM), maximum head lift and vertical suction lift.

GPM Discharge Capacity – refers to the rate of speed that water flows from the source to the discharge point. GPM is simply the power of water pumps to move water quickly.

Maximum Head lift – determines the distance a water pump can move water over a distance.

Vertical Suction Lift – this feature is important for draining a flooded basement or pond. It refers to the vertical distance from the water source to the pump.

Types of Water Pumps

Water Pumps are classified into Single stage and Multi-stage water pumps. Single stage water pumps are ideal for agricultural purposes since irrigation as well as distributing fertilisers and pesticides does not require high pressure pumps.

Meanwhile, if you are looking for the perfect pump for more demanding applications, then multi-stage water pumps are your best bet.
